Teen Vogue Fashion University 2013

Teen Vogue Fashion University 2013

I’ve been an avid reader of Teen Vogue since 2007 with my first introduction to it came via The Hills- cliché, I know. But it was the first time that everything clicked with me. I always loved writing and journalism applead to me. So did designing but I’m awful at drawing yet I still loved fashion. I never thought about combining the two until then. I’ve longingly pined to work at Teen Vogue ever since. I purchased their career handbook as soon as it hit shelves which was when I first became aware of their Fashion University.
I’ve been threatening to apply to Teen Vogue’s Fashion University for the past three years but never got around to it. Once I finished my degree in May I was (and still am) suffering from a case of fear and confusion about what to do with my life. That’s how I came to submit an application late one night in June. I thought I have nothing to lose so lets see what happens, although in the back of my mind I knew even if I did get it I wouldn’t be able to afford to go. The application is detailed. I poured in all my love and interest in the fashion industry answering questions about my aspirations, style icons and thoughts on the fashion world. Not to mention my CV and PDFs of my past work. With only 500 places and applicants from all over the world I didn’t have much hope in getting it.

Flash to 5 September when an email popped into my inbox to inform me that I had been accepted. To say I freaked out would be an understatement. I decided to collect my thoughts and think about it. It was an incredible opportunity but once again the money. But my calm and cool exterior soon went out the door when all of the classes began to rapidly book up. It was now or never and in a split second I chose now and booked my place.
This is a massive adventure for me. I’m travelling on my own to New York and I’m completely out of my comfort zone but its so exciting. I’ve already been making friends online with some of the other girls attending and I can’t wait to meet them and be around people with the same interests as me. Thankfully I love New York and I feel pretty confident and comfortable in the city so that’s easing my fear a tiny bit and of course I’m delighted to be back in my favourite city, it’s been too long.
The kick-off event is tonight and then I have a full day of classes tomorrow that includes a tour of the Teen Vogue office (yes, I will be humming the theme tune to The Hills while there!). Keep an eye out for all the details and a bit of exploring New York City.
